Test Your Knowledge on Diving Physics:
1)  Sound travels approx. _____ times faster in water than it does in air. (a) two (b) four (c) ten
2)  The specific gravity of pure water is:  (a) 0.0 (b) 1.0 (c) It varies according to where on earth it is measured
3)  Refraction is caused by the process of:  (a) light traveling at different speeds as it passes through different substances. (b) the changing           speed of light due to sunspot activity. (c) water absorbing various wave lengths of light beginning at the red end of the spectrum.
4)  Divers are most affected by what form of heat transmission?  (a) Conduction (b) Convection (c) Radiation
1)  (b) four times.  In air sound travels approx 1,100 ft per second. In water it travels 4,800 ft per second.
2)  (b) 1.0 pure water is used as the basis of the specific gravity scale.  Therefore, it is assigned the value of 1.0. Substances with a value less than 1.0 are, by definition, less dense than pure water and will float.  Substances with values greater than 1.0 are more dense and will sink.
3)  (a) As light passes through transparent substances of differing densities, the speed at which it travels changes. This change of speed causes the light wave to bend "refract."
4)  (a) Conduction refers to the transmission of heat via direct contact.  Convection and radiant transmission of heat are relatively unimportant to divers.
***Information was gathered from the PADI Diving Knowledge Workbook, great book for all those un-answered questions, come check it out, we have them in stock.

Cozumel here we come in 2011:
We have put together a tropical trip for Divers and Non-Divers. we still have some more details to refine.  We will be staying at an all-inclusive resort - Scuba Club Cozumel.  (Dates at the resort, planned for January 22 - 28, 2011)  So start saving your pennies and come along with us to some great diving, visibility, resort and island.
If interested please give us a call or e-mail, we will need the names, how many, phone number and e-mail address.  This does not commit you to this trip, when we have a get together we will send you a personal invitation to the "Cozumel Going Wild".  I have already had several people show interest and I am sure it will be a full fun loving group, sorry we did not get your names so please let us know who you might be again.
Getting ready for diving:
Many of you stop diving during the winter season and start back up in the spring, then continue to dive into summer through fall.  So what can I do to get back ready???  First thing is exercise, we have put on our winter personality (ok let's be honest FAT & pounds).  Exercise could be as simple as walk for 30 minutes 2 to 3 times a week or go to your local gym.  Another great suggestion would be to swim in a pool with your mask, fins and snorkel, you are then working more of the muscles you plan to use for scuba diving.  Second, review your scuba skills you can do this at public pools, some do allow you to  used scuba (Tualatin - Walker road or Beaverton Swim Center use too, call to check specific times & days).  You could also do a Scuba Review, this cost $60 for 2 hours with a staff member and use of all scuba equipment, we offer this program (link to our web site if you want more details:  http://www.pacifich2osports.com/dive/class_scuba_review.php.   If you don't own scuba gear this is probably your best bet, the cost of rental could be close to the price of the program.  Both of these will give you a great start for 2010 no matter where yor diving is.
(For Diver's and Non-Divers) Great program with lots of hands-on.  Brian teaches this programs and he does a great job because of his medical background. (link on web site for info: http://www.pacifich2osports.com/dive/class_ox-neur.php
