Winter Diving, how to:
Many divers during this time of year will start diving tropical destinations and that is great for those who may have the pleasure to do so. Advantages for diving now; many times better visibiltiy, less divers in the water, easier access to dive sites, see different aquatic life and it feels warmer in the water then out of the water. (1) To make your diving as peasurable as possible, you will need a good exposure suit (dry suit best), if wetsuit diving you may find one dive per day is best. Put a good portion of the suit on before arriving to the dive site. (2) Pre-set your gear up before getting to the dive site this way you are not exposure to the elements, also if you have any issues you take care of it at that time. (3) Keep yourself covered up with wind/water resistant clothing over your exposure suit especially if diving in a wetsuit, this is a must. (4) Have your hood on if you are outdoors at all times or a wool stocking cap, your biggest heat loss is out your head. (5) If you plan to make a second dive make sure to cover up immediately once out of the water, do not take any of your exposure gear off until you are ready to get in an enclosed area, dry you head/hands off immediately once you hood/gloves are off and cover up. (6) If any of your neoprene gear is wet, some people feel it helps to put warm water inside before putting on, be careful water conducts heat faster than air and don't use hot water it is easy to burn yourself. These may seems to be common sense ideas but you would be amazed at how many people I see put in flip flops, no head protection of any kind and stand outside to talk about there dive. NOTE: Please keep in mind every second counts and you must retain your heat as quickly as possible, you may not notice it but you are losing heat everytime, before you dive, during your dive and after your dive. We will munch out on some finger food, chat, maybe tell sea stories, visit with some of the staff, enjoy some cool music and more...(If you wish to bring finger food that would be great)

Flu Health Tips for the Traveler:
Who has not heard of the Flu especially H1N1, previously thought to be the Swine Flu. They say in general most divers do not fall into the high risk category. Why is this? Because high risk is 65 years and older, children younger than 5 years old, pregnant women and people with certain chronic medical conditions. Divers are generally in good general health because of the activity that is needed. Please keep in mind that if an area becomes infected by someone with the flu that it can survive from two to eight hours. If you wish to check the data on the flu, there is a weekly report called Flu View, which is a available at www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/
How to stay healthy while on a scuba vacation. First consider getting a flu vaccine. Plan your travel in advance so you prevent pre-trip stress, this will weaken your immune system. How many times have we heard, I need a vacation from my vacation. Wash your hands a lot, avoid touching your eyes, mouth or nose with your hands. Keep in mind they have health screening at some airports that can check your temperature or they look for signs. If you are found at high risk with this it could delay your trip, to find out more about this go to www.cdc.gov regarding health screenings.

Post Dive Information from the Redondo Beach Fun Shore Dive Sept 26. The turn out was great with 16 divers. Once again for the 2nd time on a fun dive, we had excellent visibility (30-40'), great tides and a great group of divers. Better yet we seen lots of cool aquatic life as well, such as; lots of octos (some out and about), sailfin sculpin, grunt sculpin, mosshead warbonnets and saving the best for last a Sun Fish, not common to be seen.

What inspired you to dive or who???
We ask this question to many of our students. WHO: Many of the answers are Sea Hunt with Lloyd Bridges, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, I am sure some of you can relate to them, these are for sure the two more popular answers to who. Then there are the typical answers, my friend/spouse/relative. WHY: I am going on a vacation to the tropics #1 answer, then there is my spouse/friend/relative wanted me too.
BUT now that you have been diving how has it helped you? Did it help you confront your fears, build your confidence, make a dream come true, help you relax, build a career in diving, strengthen your family time together?
I would love to hear your story of WHO and/or WHY? The best story will receive a special prize based on the story, OK remember this must be the truth, no sea stories.....hahaha....even thought divers can be very inventive. You could be a WINNER you never know, but then again if you are a diver we are all winners in our own way.

How do dive computers HELP!?!
Many of us already use dive computers, there is still a lot of you that do not, WHY I ask??? When divers purchase there own equipment they normally own a computer but for those that rent equipment don't normally rent or own computers. I see many divers out there don't even have a timing device of any kind...hummm I am wondering how are they keeping track of there time, I KNOW they learned about this in their training the IMPORTANCE of this. I am from the era of old time divers when there were no dive computers, now I would not dive without a computer. There are so many benefits; keeps track of time, let's you know you are ascending to fast (very helpful), let's you know how much time you have left to dive, helps track vital information you will need to log your dives (you don't have to remember everything in your head before you log), lets you know your depth at that time & maximum depth, water temperature (some may not wish to know this...hahaha), it can be adjusted for Altitude Diving, some display pressure in a easier reading format with air supply time remaining, warnings when you get low on air, I could go on and on and on with all the benefits of owning or renting a computer, once you try it you won't go back to not using one.

Solo Diving...yes or no
This subject is asked of me many times, can I dive solo or not and is PADI going to offer a specialty for solo diving? Some divers are already diving solo (meaning by themselves) and when is this happening? Going up to a lake with the family but you are the only diver, so you go diving by yourself. Spearfishing, game taking or photography, you may start out with a buddy but many times end up solo diving. Low visibility diving like what we have here, you get separated from your buddy an end up diving solo for maybe a short period of time. Divers from many years ago it was not uncommon to dive solo it was no big deal. Times have changed and diving is safer then in the past; gear, education, techniques, divers safety standards (one of them buddy diving) has made this possible. So think about it first before considering solo diving, there is a reason we have dive buddies and remember your dive buddy is only as good as what guidelines you both follow.
If you wish let me hear your opinion on this, do you agree or disagree and WHY?
