Have you been on a boat or own one:
Boating Safety Classes or Check:  I am sure at one time or another that as a diver or even a non-diver you have either been on a small boat or had one of your very own.  I am encouraging anyone who is around boats or owns one to learn more about them.  The best way is to take a Boating Safety Program, they're offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary for a very minimal cost and if you own a boat, have a Vessel Safety Check (VSC Program).  It can be well worth your effort for safety and pocket book.  I do not personally own a boat but I took the Boating Skills and Seamanship program and I learned a lot.  The one thing I learned more then anything was who's boat I didn't wish to board.  They also offer programs that are not as extensive called About Boating Safety.
This link will give a basic idea of the programs offered and commitment of time: http://www.cgaux.org/boatinged/
This link will take you to the on line Vessel Safety Check link:

Joint Responsibilities:
What does this mean??? If you are participating in a guided dive, both guide and you as a diver have a responsibility.  I will list just a few of these: Guide:  Must be experienced & professional, knowledge of water conditions, know divers experience level & training, conduct a pre-dive briefing, move slowly, point out interesting aquatic features.  Diver:   Use safe diving practices, arrive at dive site prepared to dive (some divers forget gear & don't use a check list), follow the guide's instructions (some talk during this pre-dive briefing & don't respect others that wish to listen), don't descent until they want you to & dive in a buddy group (I have comments on this but decided to keep them to myself), equal opportunity viewing (allow others to look, back away once you looked), this is the most important one of all - know your air supply (most commonly I hear all to often divers running out of air, especially in tropical destinations), what's up with that, do you think just because you are in a tropical destination that it's ok???

Fluid Replacement how important is it?
Did you know that when you breathe from a scuba tank that the air taken into the lungs that nearly twice the normal amount of water is lost from your body.  Diuretics contribute to the pre-dive dehydration, such as coffee, tea or alcohol.  Divers must take into consideration some additional concerns for fluid loss and replacement. So the big question is how do I know when I need it.  A good indication is if you are not urinating or your urine is dark yellow then yes, drink fluids.  Dehydration also plays a role with increasing the risk of hyporthermia, Why is this?  It reduces the volume of blood available for circulation to the skin.  Dehydration also increases the risk of Decompression Sickness as a result of inadequate blood flow to the muscles and tissues.  Waters and juices are the preferred fluid replacement of choice by most, others have there own opinion and results.
If interested in learning more about options of fluid replacement, then open up this link:
Congrats to Justin Behrens for his recent accomplishment he is now a PADI Master Scuba Diver

Are you scuba fit?
I am you might say someone who believes in staying fit, in fact many of you have seen me at 24 hour fitness in Hillsboro.  As you may already know as we get, you might say, more experienced (ok older) it becomes harder to stay in shape.  We have to dedicate more time exercising to even maintain our weight and change our eating habits.  For the ones that do not make these adjustments find out over time that there suits have shrunk....hahahaha.....right or better yet our arms have gotten shorter, we can barely reach our feet to put on our fins.  So I happen to come across a web site that might possibly be of interest to you all, called www.scubafit.com.  Check it out, if this will be of some help to you great, even if one person gets fit from it then I have at least accomplished my goal.

Should I or Shouldn't I that is the question?:

Diver's ask us all the time should I get my regulator serviced regularly, diving a lot or not diving much???

Yes, you should have your equipment serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Not only will this vastly extend the life of your equipment but it will also ensure that the manufacturer will honor its warranty agreement. And the less you use your equipment, the more important service becomes. The soft parts inside the regulator are likely to suffer damage from ozone and other atmospheric contaminants if they sit unused for long periods of time. Also, every regulator is subject to small amounts of corrosion, no matter how well it is cleaned. Frequent use of the regulator breaks up this corrosion and limits its growth. But a little spot of corrosion allowed to grow unimpeded for weeks or months can turn into a major problem.  (excerpt for scuba diving magazine)

Tanks and Diving:
It isn't the size of the tank; it's how you use it.
When I hear divers talk, new and experienced, they ask how long did you stay down underwater and how much air do you have left?  It's a very common question and maybe kind of a competition "I stayed down 45 minutes and had 1500psi left, how much air did you have left and how long did you dive"? I even do it myself, of course sometimes people forget about the size of the tank they are using.  They also say I need to get a bigger tank because I can not stay down very long, in certain types of dives this all makes sense, like deeper dives or any type of penetration dives.  I try to encourage people to consider maybe working on their diving skills, such as; breathing techniques, streamlining (arm placement and movement), proper fin kicking, all these play an important factor in your air consumption.  You need to get more dives in, dive more often not once a year, own your gear is important, you are now comfortable with it and familiar with it.  So REMEMBER, "It isn't the size of the tank; it's how you use it".  Thanks to Justin Behrens he is responsible for this saying.

I am sure some of you are saying, what are moisture munchers???  If you have an underwater camera system this could be in your cameras best interest to have.
"8 Dives verses 80 Dives" who is the better diver:
Divers will talk about how many dives they have done; like it means that they have lots of experience and are great divers.  Ok this could be true but then again maybe not.  So you are thinking where is we going with this.  I had gone diving with a couple divers that only had 8 dives, as we were diving we came across two other divers.  I watched to my amazement these other 80+ dive divers negative, kicking up the bottom, arms flailing, lots of air bubbles expelling through their regulator as they are on their underwater sightseeing adventure.  So here I am neutrally buoyant, arms clasped in front of me, relaxed breathing as well as my dive buddies looking back and fourth thinking to myself, 8 dives verses 80+ dives...hummm)  The moral of this story is many of us think "Practice Makes Perfect" that's what we have been told "Perfect Practice Makes Perfect".  So the next time you go diving please work on your diving skills, especially buoyancy control is so important.  When I see people who have trouble with buoyancy and on the bottom I sometimes think that many divers are over weighted, when was the last time you did a weight check and do you know how much weight you need with what type of tank you are using.
Maybe consider the Peak Performance Buoyancy Course.

FYI on Dive Flags..how to not get a fine:
The red and white diver-down flag, originally devised in about 1957, is intended to protect divers themselves. This flag is often referred to as unofficial or voluntary because it is not mandated by the international or inland rules of the road. This assertion is erroneous. State law or regulation in virtually every state requires the use of the diver down flag.  Typically, the laws or regulations on the use of this flag require divers to display the flag and to remain within a specified distance of it when they are near the surface. This often means the flag is best mounted on a float or buoy near the actual dive point rather than on the boat itself. Restrictions vary from state to state, but typically include a zone around the flag where no other boats are allowed and a second, larger zone in which their speed is limited. A number of states also prohibit the display of the diver-down flag when a diver is not actually in the water.
I did lots of research, had a very difficult time finding the true 100% cut & dry answer for Washington or Oregon especially for shore diving.  So I will reference back to the PADI Open Water manual - rule of thumb is stay within 50 feet of you flag and for boaters to stay at least 100 to 200 feet away.  Also, don't display the dive flag unless divers are actually in the water.
I have included a couple links that might help some it was about the best I could find over all.

April 2008 - SCUBA News

Navigation Diving or Deep Diving:
Do you want to LEARN to Navigate better:  Ok tell the truth, how many divers really do well with underwater navigation?  This is one diving technique, all divers need to be proficient at.  Do you know all the parts of your compass, do you use a direct or indirect compass, do you know how to do a u-pattern, do you know how to use a course plotter?  Next Navigation Course:  April 23 - Class, May 3 - 3 Dives (Dives are done at a local dive site)
Please see Underwater Navigator attachment for more details or go to the store calendar, click on April 23 for details.
LEARN to Deep Dive properly and safely:  Many divers already dive beyond there trained deep limit, so does this mean that you don't need to be training?  No...you need to learn all safety procedures, the ins and outs of diving deep.                For some reason we are lured to dive deep and as divers we are adventurous people.
Next Deep Diver Course:  May 21 - Class, May 31 & June 1 - 4 Dives
Please see Deep Brochure attachment for more details or go to the store calendar, click on May 21 for details.
NEXT Aqua Missions for kids ages 8 - 12 years old - April 13:
This is a great program for your kids that want to be a diver.  We take care of them, no need to worry about them while diving.  Parents have the option to join your kid(s) on Aqua Mission 5 and you don't have to be a certified diver to do this.  The instructor is great with kids, he always has something interesting and inventive happening in the Seal Team program.
April Weights $pecial:
Don't let the price of weight sink into your pocket book.  So this is your chance to let the weight sink you down underwater and save on purchase of weights.
We are offering through the month of April $1.00 off per pound of weight, ankle weights, tank weights, weight belt.
For example: if you bought a 12lb belt you would receive $12 off of retail prices or 40lbs of weight you would receive $40 off.                    Sale ends:  April 30, 2008 - No other discounts apply - New products only - Limited to stock on hand.
WANTED - Rescue Divers:
We are looking for a few good PADI Rescue Divers.  If you are an active diver, good with people, good diving habits and possibly considering in the future working towards Divemaster training please call us here at Pacific Watersports (503) 642-3483/DIVE, ask for Laurie or e-mail laurie at: laurie@pacificwatersports.com
Need a Dive Buddy Blog:
This Blog gives you an opportunity to find a dive buddy.  All you have to do is signup and create a post.  List when you plan to dive, where you would like to dive, share a ride and any other logistics.  The Blog can then be searched by other divers looking for a dive buddy.  I get people calling us here to see if anyone wants to go diving.  So if you are looking for a dive buddy or want to go diving please visit this location often on our web site.  This is located under Resources I have included a direct link for you to visit.
Don't Learn the Hard Way:
Ask yourself, when was the last time you truly did a Pre-Dive Safety Check???  PADI's safety check is Begin (BCD) Check adjustment, operation, low pressure connection, tank firm in band. With (Weights) Check for proper weight, type of quick release system & clear to be released, belts with right hand release. Review (Releases) Be familiar with buddy's releases and how they work, check to make sure there secure. And (Air) Check for ample air for both of you, valve is open, regulator & alternate works properly & where to find it & how each other's works. Friend (Final OK) Give each other final inspection looking for any out of place equipment.  So don't learn the hard way, no matter how many dives you have done, no matter how experienced you are, don't feel that you should not complete one with you and your buddy.

Do YOU Know??? About tank valves:
   1)  All scuba tank valves are required to have a Burst Disc....Why....that way it ruptures before the bursting pressure of a tank would be reached by overfilling or overheating. (Note: this is why you can not just put any valve on to any tank)
   2)  A scuba tank burst disk is designed to rupture at a pressure of....125% to 166% of a scuba tanks working pressure, the burst pressure is not precise. (3000 psi burst disc are 4800 psi burst pressure, remember it gets weaker over time, the disc is made of copper.   It is recommended to have these replaced when you have your tank hydro tested.)
   3) The purpose of the valve snorkel is to....keeps loose particles and water from entering the valve and regulator if you invert the tank, foreign material can damage your valve or regulator and worse yet not work at all. (If you hear a rattle sound in your tank, most likely this has come unscrewed and needs to be replaced immediately.)

Gear Tip:
Are you going to be or have you been flying on a plane to go scuba diving?  If you said yes then please read on ..... Regulator/Gauges/Computers recommended to take as a carry on....WHY?  For one reason it can be a very expensive item(s) to have disappear out of your luggage.  It's a personal piece of equipment but even more important it has the potential for damage.  If you have an analog pressure gauge they have a safety plug. We have seen these dislodge after a person has been flying with this in the luggage compartment. The next time they dive, the gauge floods, then they are needing to replace this gauge.  Many compasses have been cracked unknowingly, it works at the surface but once you get underwater with pressure at depth and now water filled they no longer work.  I am sure there are even more possibilities of WHY?  So WHY not prevent these from happening and take your regulator system on the plane with you.

HOW to prevent flooding.....Many divers and snorkelers have underwater cameras, dive lights or dry containers of some type.  The best prevention for flooding is before entering the water is to submerge the item in fresh water and see if bubbles continue to escape, if so then you probably did not get a proper seal.  Take out of water, dry item off (hands as well) and re-check the o-ring seal to make sure it has not been damaged or contaminants are on it,  even a small strand of hair could make it leak, then re-submerge in fresh water for another check.
NEVER rush while sealing these items you will pay for it in the long run for what you think you saved in time!!!
