When I was a kid in Junior High I had my first "diving" experience. A friend and I made a diving helmet out of a bucket with a Plexiglas window. We used a bicycle pump to supply air through a garden hose, we dove in a pool and a lake. We did not know anything about air purity or dive tables. We are lucky we did not kill ourselves. Today, I highly encourage getting trained by a professional and enroll in a SCUBA Course. If for some reason you are just curious about diving and want an introduction, then consider taking a Discover SCUBA class instead of making your own helmet like I did.
I started SCUBA Diving in 1982 in central Illinois. We dove in quarries, lakes, and ponds, not very exciting diving. If we had 5foot visibility that was considered good and 20 feet was unbelievable. In Illinois, I worked as Paramedic, did Rescue Diving and finished my degree in computer science. I dove around the Midwest and did trips to Florida and the Caribbean. When I moved out to Oregon, I really re-discovered diving. The Northwest is a completely different world of diving, and one I really love. I became a PADI Dive Master, PADI Master Diver and DAN Instructor. I teach the CPR/AED, First aid and DAN Oxygen and Neurological Assessment Courses at Pacific Watersports.
